Lake Products and Services Ltd. (LPS) was incorporated in 2001 to develop a modern scientifically based plant extraction industry in Uganda. The company is one of the first private enterprises in East Africa to commercially produce and process locally grown botanicals. Using the rich heritage of this part of Africa LPS provides farmers with new crop and agro-forestry opportunities. It also exports a range of sustainably grown natural products, which are either endangered or difficult to obtain in the wild. LPS is part of Madhvani International, a major agro-business group with interests in East Africa and the Indian sub-continent. LPS, through its sister company Nilgiri Botanicals (Pvt) Ltd., can also access production facilities in Southern India giving the group the unique position to supply botanicals from both sides of the Indian Ocean and to benefit from Africa’s as well as India’s medicinal expertise.
OPTIMISED PRODUCTION SYSTEMS
Since 2001 LPS has undertaken a series of agronomic trials to identify the best possible growing conditions for each crop and to develop cultivation and post harvest handling practices that can guarantee highest quality standards. Elite seeds are sourced globally and batch samples are grown and analysed for phyto-chemical constituents at top laboratories in Uganda and the UK. LPS will shortly install modern extraction facilities to supply whole herb and standardised botanical extracts.
LPS is committed to protecting the environment, preserving long-term soil fertility and the bio-diversity of the region. The company works to develop methods to sustainably cultivate botanicals that are endangered in the wild and to grow plants, which are free from pesticides and artificial fertilisers, wherever possible.
